Student Letter from IUP President - Dr. Tony Atwater

Dear Students:

Our community suffered a devastating loss Saturday with the deaths of three Pittsburgh Police officers killed in the line of duty. I am saddened to report that one of the three officers, Officer Stephen J. Mayhle, was an IUP alumus. Officer Mayhle was a 2002 criminology department graduate and a native of Indiana. He is survived by his wife, Shandra; daughters Jennifer, 6, and Brooklynn, 3; his parents, of Indiana; and many members of his extended family. I have conveyed the deep sympathies of the IUP community to Mrs. Mayhle and her family.

A formal viewing for Officer Mayhle and his fallen comrades will be held Wednesday from 3 to 9 p.m. at the City County Building in Pittsburgh, and a funeral service for the officers will be held Thursday at 1 p.m. in the Petersen Events Center in Pittsburgh.Locally, friends will be received from noon to 9 p.m. Friday at the John A. Lefdahl Funeral Home, Indiana. A private funeral service for family only will be conducted Saturday at 11 a.m. at the funeral home with public internment to follow in Oakland Cemetery in Indiana.I know that you join me in remembering Officer Mayhle and his family and friends in your thoughts and prayers during this difficult time.

Tony Atwater, Ph.D.
